KARACHI, Jan 5, 2024: Today marks the 96th birth anniversary of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, a pivotal figure in Pakistan’s political history, the founder of the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), and the architect of the country’s unified constitution.

Following PNA movement, Gen Zia ousted Bhutto and imposed martial law. and hanged Bhutto. which is termed judicial murder. Last month Supreme court of Pakistan  take up the Presidential Reference on Bhutto case. Further hearing is expected.

Former President Asif Zardari, reflecting on the occasion, praised Bhutto as a leader who instilled a sense of dignity and critical thinking among the oppressed. He emphasized that Bhutto’s ideology and thoughts continue to serve as a guiding light for the leadership and workers of the People’s Party.

Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, a towering statesman, served as the fourth president of Pakistan from 1971 to 1973 and later as the ninth prime minister from 1973 to 1977. He played a key role in shaping the nation’s destiny during a critical period.

Bhutto’s legacy is marked by a complex political journey. He founded the PPP in 1967 on an Islamic socialist platform, advocating for the rights of the common people. His leadership led to significant diplomatic achievements, such as the recovery of prisoners of war and territory after the 1971 war with India, signing the Simla Agreement, and strengthening ties with China and Saudi Arabia.

Furthermore, Bhutto’s government drafted the current constitution of Pakistan in 1973, a significant milestone in the country’s constitutional history. Despite these accomplishments, his nationalization policies in industries, healthcare, and education faced criticism for contributing to economic stagnation.

The latter part of Bhutto’s tenure was marked by civil disorder and allegations of vote rigging, leading to his deposition in a military coup on July 5, 1977, by General Zia-ul-Haq. The subsequent trial and controversial execution in 1979 further intensified the debate surrounding Bhutto’s legacy.

Combined opposition formed an alliance called MRD, against Gen Zia Martial and launched movement accross the country.

Zulfikar Ali Bhutto’s influence endures, with supporters lauding his nationalism and secular internationalist agenda, while critics point to political repression and economic challenges during his tenure. The PPP, founded by Bhutto, remains a significant political force in Pakistan, with his daughter Benazir Bhutto, son-in-law Asif Ali Zardari and grandson Bilawal Bhutto Zardari playing prominent roles in the country’s political landscape.

As the nation commemorates Bhutto’s birth anniversary, discussions on his contributions and the impact of his policies continue, underscoring the enduring legacy of this influential leader.
