Zohran Mamdani Elected New York City’s First Muslim Mayor

NEW YORK: In a historic victory, Democrat Zohran Mamdani, a 34-year-old Democratic socialist, has been elected as New York City’s first Muslim mayor, defeating political heavyweight and former Governor Andrew Cuomo in a closely watched race that signals a generational and ideological shift within the Democratic Party.

According to CBS News, Mamdani secured 1,035,645 votes (50.4 per cent) against Cuomo’s 854,783 (41.6pc), while Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa trailed with 146,127 (7.1pc).

The victory marks the culmination of Mamdani’s meteoric rise from a little-known state lawmaker to one of the most visible figures in U.S. progressive politics. He becomes the youngest person to hold the mayor’s office in over a century and the first Muslim to lead America’s largest city.

Mamdani, born in Uganda to a family of Indian origin, immigrated to the United States at the age of seven and became a naturalised citizen in 2018. His campaign, built around progressive ideals and grassroots mobilisation, faced intense criticism from business elites, conservative media, and even former President Donald Trump, who labeled him a “Jew hater” during the campaign’s final stretch.

Despite the attacks, Mamdani’s message of hope and political empowerment resonated strongly with voters.
Hope is alive,” he told supporters during his victory speech. “We won because New Yorkers allowed themselves to hope that the impossible could be made possible. Politics will no longer be something done to us — it’s something we do.”

In a pointed message to Trump, Mamdani quipped, “Donald Trump, since I know you are watching, I have four words for you: Turn the volume up!

He vowed to confront corruption and economic inequality in the city, pledging to “end the culture of corruption that has allowed billionaires like Trump to evade taxation and exploit loopholes.”

“We will stand alongside unions and expand labour protections because we know that when working people have iron-clad rights, the bosses who seek to extort them become very small indeed,” he said.

Mamdani’s victory came as Democrats also captured key governor races across several states, boosting morale within the party and raising alarms among Republicans ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.

Political analysts see Mamdani’s win as a turning point for progressive politics in the United States — and a moment of reckoning for establishment Democrats and the Republican leadership alike.
