Spain officially recognizes Palestine as an independent state

Madrid, Spain May 28,2024: In a significant diplomatic move, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has announced Spain’s official recognition of Palestine as an independent state.

This historic decision aligns with United Nations resolutions and marks a pivotal moment in international relations concerning the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

In his announcement, Prime Minister Sanchez emphasized the unparalleled suffering endured by Palestinians, asserting that it is a global responsibility to establish peace. “There is no example in history of the atrocities faced by Palestine,” Sanchez stated. “Recognition of Palestine is in accordance with the resolutions of the United Nations, and this is a historical moment.”

The Prime Minister confirmed that the Spanish cabinet would formally approve the recognition of Palestine, encompassing the Gaza Strip and the West Bank. “The goal of all of us is to establish peace,” he said. “Spain will not recognize any change in the Palestinian borders after 1967.”

This recognition by Spain increases the number of countries acknowledging Palestinian statehood to 146. Reports indicate that Norway and Ireland are also poised to officially recognize Palestine today. In a related development, Ireland’s Foreign Minister Michael Martin has indicated that the European Union is contemplating sanctions against Israel due to its actions in Gaza.

Martin warned that if Israel continues to disregard the decisions of the International Court of Justice, it could face EU sanctions. “Ireland will support EU sanctions against Israel,” he declared.

The recognition by Spain and potentially other European nations marks a significant shift in international dynamics and underscores a growing call for a peaceful resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
