SC overrules Balochistan High Court's constituency changes verdict
ISLAMABAD, Dec 18,2023: In a pivotal decision today, the Supreme Court of Pakistan has quashed the Balochistan High Court’s decision to alter constituencies, thereby closing any avenues for delaying the upcoming general elections. The crucial matter was deliberated upon by a 3-member bench, led by Justice Sardar Tariq.
The Supreme Court emphatically declared that objections to constituencies cannot be entertained once the election schedule has been officially released. This ruling is seen as a measure to uphold the integrity and timely execution of the democratic process in the country.
The decision comes in response to an appeal filed by the Election Commission, challenging the alterations made by the Balochistan High Court. The Supreme Court, in accepting the appeal, has effectively annulled the changes imposed by the lower court.
It is noteworthy that the Balochistan High Court’s initial decision had sparked controversy by modifying the constituencies designated by the Election Commission. With the Supreme Court’s intervention, the electoral landscape is now set to proceed according to the original plan, ensuring the scheduled general elections will take place without any disruptions.
This development reaffirms the judiciary’s commitment to upholding the democratic principles and maintaining the sanctity of electoral processes in Pakistan.
