PML-N navigates political landscape, Considers PTI defectors for upcoming elections

Islamabad, Jan 6, 2024 – In a surprising turn of events, an internal source within the Pakistan Muslim League (N) (PML-N) revealed the party’s willingness to offer electoral tickets to members who defected from the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and supported the recent no-confidence vote.

Under the leadership of Raja Riaz, former Leader of Opposition during the Shahbaz Sharif-led government, the PML-N is actively strategizing ahead of the upcoming elections. While the move has stirred speculation, Non-League leader Maryam Aurangzeb emphasized that nothing has been finalized, dismissing premature claims about ticket distributions.

Notable among the potential candidates is Talal Chaudhry from Jaranwala (Faisalabad), a dedicated party loyalist who faced a five-year disqualification from the Supreme Court for contempt of court during the tenure of Justice Saqib Nisar. Chaudhry is resolute about contesting from NA-96 and has refrained from submitting nomination papers for any other constituency.

Chaudhry Farrukh Altaf from Jhelum has emerged as a finalized candidate, with family ties to former Governor of Punjab, Chaudhry Altaf Hussain, during Benazir Bhutto’s Prime Ministership. Interestingly, Farrukh Altaf and Fawad Chaudhry, the latter being his cousin, have both submitted nomination papers from NA-61, potentially setting the stage for a familial electoral competition.

Raja Riaz, originally from Faisalabad, is slated to contest from a seat that was previously occupied by Rana Ehsan Afzal Khan. The decision has sparked internal debates within the party, with a party leader suggesting that Raja Riaz is considered a strong candidate.

In addition to these developments, various defectors from the PTI are being considered for PML-N tickets, including Rana Qasim Noon (Multan), Abdul Ghaffar Vito (Bahawalnagar), Sami-ul-Hasan Geelani (Bahawalpur), Riyaz Mazari (Dera Ghazi Khan), Afzal Dhandla (Bhakkar), Syed Mubeen Ahmed (Rahimyar Khan), and Aamir Gopang (Muzaffargarh).

As the political landscape continues to evolve, these potential candidacies underscore the complex dynamics at play, with rivalries, familial connections, and party affiliations shaping the electoral chessboard. With the elections looming, the PML-N’s strategic considerations and candidate selections are closely watched by political observers across the nation.
