Pakistan’s Deputy PM Ishaq Dar to Visit China for Key Talks on Regional Stability

Islamabad, May 18: Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar will embark on an official visit to Beijing from May 19 to 22 for high-level discussions with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, Pakistan’s Foreign Office announced on Sunday.

The visit comes amid heightened tensions in South Asia following last week’s ceasefire between Pakistan and India, which was brokered after a military standoff triggered by the Pahalgam attack in Occupied Kashmir. Pakistan had accused India of involvement in the attack without providing evidence.

On May 6-7, Indian airstrikes in Punjab and Azad Kashmir resulted in civilian casualties, prompting Pakistan to shoot down five Indian jets. Subsequent drone interceptions and airbase strikes further escalated tensions before U.S. mediation on May 10 helped secure a temporary truce. While India has maintained an aggressive posture, Pakistan has cautioned against further escalation and reiterated its offer for dialogue.

Focus on Regional Stability and Bilateral Ties
According to the Foreign Office, Dar’s visit—undertaken at the invitation of FM Wang Yi—will focus on the evolving regional situation and its impact on peace and stability. The two leaders will also review the full spectrum of Pakistan-China relations and discuss global developments of mutual interest.

The trip follows China’s reaffirmation of support for Pakistan during President Asif Ali Zardari’s meeting with Chinese officials on May 5, amid the peak of tensions with India.

Strengthening Pakistan-China Partnership
Pakistan and China share a robust bilateral relationship, anchored by multi-billion-dollar initiatives like the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), often described as an economic “lifeline” for Islamabad. Earlier this year, Beijing extended the repayment period of a $2 billion loan to Pakistan, providing critical relief to the country’s foreign exchange reserves.

The Foreign Office stated that Dar’s visit underscores the continued high-level engagement between the two allies, reflecting their commitment to strategic cooperation amid regional uncertainties. (With input from agencies)
