ISLAMABAD – The ceasefire agreement between Pakistan and India, established after recent military tensions, has no set expiration date, officials from both countries confirmed Sunday, dispelling rumors that the truce was set to lapse over the weekend.

Confusion Over Ceasefire Deadline

Speculation about a May 18 deadline arose after Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar informed the Senate last Thursday that the Directors General of Military Operations (DGMOs) of both countries had agreed on May 14 to extend the ceasefire until Sunday. Media reports subsequently suggested the truce would expire unless renewed.

However, officials from both sides clarified that no DGMO talks were scheduled for Sunday and that the ceasefire—brokered through intensive U.S. diplomacy—remains in effect indefinitely.

Statements from Officials

An Indian official stated, “There is no expiry date to the break in hostilities, as reaffirmed in the DGMOs’ interaction of May 12.”

While the Pakistan Army did not issue an official statement, a diplomat speaking anonymously confirmed that the ceasefire remains active without a fixed timeframe. The diplomat added that military discussions were focused on “making the ceasefire sustainable.”

Background of the Ceasefire

The May 10 truce followed the most severe escalation between the nuclear-armed neighbors in over two decades, marked by cross-Line of Control (LoC) shelling, drone incursions, and airstrikes. The U.S., led by Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, played a key mediating role, with support from Saudi Arabia.

ISPR Director General’s Remarks

The Director General of Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) expressed confidence that the ceasefire could “hold easily” with continued confidence-building measures (CBMs) from both sides. He also noted that India’s policy on Kashmir had failed to achieve its objectives. (Monitoring Desk)
