Narowal, Nov 26, 2023 – Former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif fired a fresh salvo at those he holds responsible for his ouster, particularly targeting Prime Minister Imran Khan and his sponsors, whom he claims are equally culpable for the current economic challenges faced by Pakistan.
Addressing a gathering at the Sialkot Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the PML-N supremo highlighted the policy and economic achievements during the PML-N’s tenure and lamented the disruption caused by the imposition of Imran Khan as the country’s leader. Sharif argued that the decision halted the wheels of progress, preventing the continuation of the momentum witnessed in the 1990s.
Emphasizing the need for political stability and long-term policies to instill investor confidence and uplift the economy, Nawaz Sharif expressed regret that the trajectory set in the 1990s could have led to Pakistan’s exports exceeding $300 billion if sustained.
Sharif didn’t hold back in airing his grievances against those responsible for his removal in 2017. He accused the individual who succeeded him of causing damage to the economy, pointing out that the sponsors behind Imran Khan share responsibility for the country’s current state.
Recalling the 2018 elections, Sharif asserted that despite the failure of the Results Transmission System (RTS), his party emerged victorious. However, he claimed that the delay in announcing the results allowed for tampering with votes. Sharif criticized the circumstances that led to the formation of the PTI government, alleging that private planes brought in people to facilitate the process.
Highlighting the challenges faced by prime ministers in Pakistan, Sharif questioned the country’s development prospects when its leaders faced imprisonment, exile, or worse. He reminisced about his own experience, stating, “I was the prime minister of Pakistan in the morning and became a plane hijacker in the evening,” referring to the 1999 coup against his government.
In a workers’ convention in Sialkot, Nawaz Sharif asserted that the PML-N government’s ouster was unjust, stating, “we were punished” without any valid reason. The verbal assault by the seasoned politician adds a new chapter to the ongoing political discourse in Pakistan.
