Punjab CM Maryam Nawaz Suspends Mayo Hospital MS Over Poor Healthcare Services
Punjab CM Maryam Nawaz suspended Mayo Hospital MS over poor patient care, mismanagement, and lack of medicines during a surprise hospital visit.
LAHORE: Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif made a surprise visit to Mayo Hospital Lahore on Thursday, leading to the suspension of Medical Superintendent Dr. Faisal Masood and CEO Professor Ahsan Nouman. The decision came after multiple complaints from patients about poor healthcare services, unavailability of medicines, and hospital mismanagement.
Accompanied by Provincial Specialised Healthcare Minister Khawaja Salman Rafique, Senior Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb, and other senior health officials, the CM directly engaged with patients, exposing serious administrative failures.
Patient Complaints and Administrative Negligence
During her hospital rounds, CM Maryam Nawaz visited several key departments, including:
- Emergency Ward
- TB and Chest Ward
- ICU and Cardiology Department
Patients voiced frustration over lack of medicines, injections, and essential equipment, pointing to severe mismanagement. The CM also observed unhygienic conditions, further reinforcing concerns about the hospital’s deteriorating state.
“Patients come here seeking treatment but face suffering instead. The hospital administration is indifferent to their struggles,” she stated.
Lift Collapse Incident Adds to Concerns
The suspension of the hospital MS also followed an incident last week where a hospital lift collapsed, injuring 10 nursing staff members. An initial inquiry revealed administrative negligence, prompting the CM to demand accountability from hospital management.
Emergency Meeting and Inquiry Ordered
Following the inspection, CM Maryam Nawaz convened an emergency meeting at the hospital, directing officials to:
- Launch a detailed inquiry into administrative failures.
- Ensure 100% availability of free medicines for patients.
- Improve hygiene and medical facilities immediately.
She also inquired about the hospital’s development plans and emphasized the urgent need for infrastructure improvement.
Rural Health Centers to Be Outsourced
In a separate meeting, the CM announced plans to outsource rural health centers across Punjab, ensuring:
- Better medical and diagnostic facilities comparable to major hospitals.
- Access to general surgery, gynecology, diagnostics, and medical tests.
- Enhanced patient referral system for improved healthcare delivery.
“Rural health centers will be transformed to provide quality medical services, eliminating the gap between urban and rural healthcare,” she asserted.
Ensuring Accountability and Healthcare Reform
The suspension of Mayo Hospital’s MS signals Punjab’s growing focus on healthcare accountability under CM Maryam Nawaz’s leadership. With inquiries underway and plans for hospital restructuring, the Punjab government aims to enhance healthcare delivery and prevent administrative lapses in major medical institutions.
