PILER Urges Collective Action to End Violence Against Women
Karachi, November 24, 2025 — On the eve of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, the Pakistan Institute of Labour Education and Research (PILER) hosted a community dialogue on Monday to draw attention to the alarming rise in gender-based violence and the urgent need for stronger support mechanisms for survivors.
Held at the PILER office, the event brought together workers, civil society representatives, activists, students and local residents. The large turnout reflected widespread public concern over increasing incidents of violence against women across the country.
Addressing the gathering, PILER Director Abbas Haider stressed that ending violence against women demands sustained and collective action. “The 16 Days of Activism is more than a symbolic campaign — it is a call to governments, institutions and communities to make firm commitments. Laws exist, but without enforcement and societal acceptance, they remain ineffective,” he said. Haider underscored the importance of implementing legal protections, enhancing policing and investing in preventive programs that challenge harmful social norms.
Speaking on the challenges faced by survivors, Shamim Ali highlighted barriers such as fear, stigma and lack of awareness about legal rights. She said women must be informed about available remedies and protection mechanisms. “We need trained personnel at the community level to help survivors file complaints and access justice. It is equally important to safeguard women workers from harassment and provide clear, accessible channels for reporting abuse,” she added. Ali also emphasized the need for safe shelters, counseling services and economic empowerment for vulnerable women.
Community mobilizer Mariyam noted that violence against women is not a private issue but a fundamental human rights violation. “Ending this violence requires society to stand by survivors, confront discriminatory attitudes and hold state institutions accountable,” she said, urging men and youth to play an active role in awareness efforts.
Participants expressed solidarity with survivors of gender-based violence and pledged to support awareness initiatives throughout the 16 Days of Activism campaign, which concludes on December 10, observed globally as Human Rights Day.
