Umerkot: Better Local Governance Stressed to Ensure Basic Amenities for Citizens
Umerkot, September 30, 2025- Speakers at an influencing and networking meeting, held at the AWARE office Umerkot under the Aawaz-II Project funded by FCDO and Care International in Pakistan, emphasized that improved local governance is essential to ensure that basic amenities reach the doorsteps of common citizens.
Advocate Heman Das Bheel, District Council Member from Kharoro Syed, highlighted that citizenship-related matters are often complicated. He pointed out that the lack of digital literacy among common citizens creates serious issues, resulting in delays and prolonged cases.
Town Officer Awais Raza Samejo urged civil society to take an active role in educating citizens, particularly those who are illiterate, so they can effectively benefit from the services of various government departments.
Union Council Chairman Arif Mahar (Hazrat Mian Jan Muhammad) stressed that while better governance is crucial to provide services to citizens, limited resources pose significant challenges in meeting the growing needs of the population.
Other speakers, including Sada Gul Oad (Computer Operator UC Hazrat Mian Jan Muhammad), and social activists Sabhago Bheel, Abid Hussain Norio, Farheen Magsi, Naeemullah, and Azra Qambrani, echoed the call for awareness campaigns. They urged local government departments to launch outreach initiatives so that citizens, especially marginalized communities, can access government programs and services available at various levels.
The meeting concluded with a consensus that collaboration between civil society and local government is key to ensuring that essential services reach all citizens equitably.
