Elon Musk Launches New Political Party to Challenge U.S. “One-Party System”

Tech billionaire breaks with Trump, unveils America Party amid growing political feud
WASHINGTON – Tech magnate Elon Musk, once a prominent supporter of U.S. President Donald Trump, announced Saturday the formation of a new political party aimed at disrupting what he described as the nation’s entrenched “one-party system.”
Musk, the world’s richest individual and previously the largest donor to Trump’s 2024 campaign, unveiled the “America Party” via a post on X — the social media platform he owns. The move marks a significant shift in the political landscape, following a public and increasingly bitter rift between the two former allies.
“When it comes to bankrupting our country with waste & graft, we live in a one-party system, not a democracy,” Musk wrote. “Today, the America Party is formed to give you back your freedom.”
The fallout between Elon Musk and Trump intensified after Musk led an initiative under the Trump administration known as the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), advocating sweeping cuts to federal spending and workforce reductions. The relationship soured further over Trump’s signature domestic agenda, dubbed the “One Big Beautiful Bill,” which Musk vehemently opposed.
Musk accused Trump and Republican lawmakers of betraying fiscal conservative principles, claiming the bill — projected to add $3.4 trillion to the national deficit over the next decade — amounted to “debt slavery.”
“They will lose their primary next year if it is the last thing I do on this Earth,” Musk declared earlier this week.
The newly launched America Party aims to mount a focused political offensive, particularly in vulnerable congressional districts. “One way to execute on this would be to laser-focus on just 2 or 3 Senate seats and 8 to 10 House districts,” Musk posted Friday, alongside a poll asking users whether they support breaking away from the traditional two-party system. The poll, posted on Independence Day, garnered over 1.2 million responses, with a two-to-one margin in favor of a new party.
“By a factor of 2 to 1, you want a new political party and you shall have it!” Musk declared on Saturday.
The billionaire also shared a meme depicting a two-headed snake with the caption: “End the Uniparty,” underscoring his stance against what he sees as a political establishment that transcends party lines.
Tensions escalated further after Musk’s attacks on the spending bill, with Trump reportedly threatening to strip federal funding from Musk’s companies and even suggesting the possibility of deportation. “We’ll have to take a look,” the president said when asked whether Musk, a naturalized U.S. citizen originally from South Africa, could face deportation.
While it remains unclear what effect the America Party will have on the 2026 midterm elections or the 2028 presidential race, political analysts note historical precedents of third-party campaigns acting as spoilers — notably Ross Perot’s 1992 bid, which some believe contributed to George H.W. Bush’s loss to Bill Clinton.
“You are pulling a Ross Perot, and I don’t like it,” one user posted on X in response to Musk’s announcement.
Whether Musk’s venture can reshape U.S. politics or simply siphon votes from one of the major parties remains to be seen. For now, the stage appears set for a high-stakes confrontation between two of the country’s most powerful and polarizing figures
