Hyderabad Labour Day Rally

Under the scorching sun, civil society activists gathered outside the Hyderabad Press Club on Thursday to mark International Labour Day, calling for stronger protections, education, and empowerment for workers in Pakistan.

Despite existing labour laws, enforcement remains weak, leaving millions of workers vulnerable to low wages, unsafe conditions, and lack of social security. According to the International Labour Organisation (ILO), Pakistan has still not ratified 55 key conventions and protocols meant to safeguard labour rights.

Protesters at the Hyderabad Labour Day rally emphasized the need for urgent reforms, including better wages, social protection, and fair representation for workers. The event featured cultural performances, with participants staging theatre acts and dances to highlight workers’ struggles and celebrate their contributions.

While the government has pledged job creation, systemic issues such as exploitative working conditions and inadequate legal safeguards persist. Activists urged authorities to prioritize labour rights and ensure compliance with international standards.

The rally served as a reminder of the ongoing fight for workers’ dignity and justice in Pakistan. Below are some glimpses from the event.
