Senate body reviews exports, regulatory hurdles

Karachi on March 24, 2025-The Senate Standing Committee on Commerce met at the Trade Development Authority of Pakistan (TDAP) headquarters here on Monday, to assess Pakistan trade development and address key export challenges. Chaired by Senator Anusha Rehman, the session included discussions on pharmaceutical exports, Iran-Pakistan barter trade, and textile sector performance.

Pharmaceutical Exports & WHO Certification
Senator Anusha Rehman raised concerns about Pakistan’s pharmaceutical exports and the delay in securing WHO Level 3 certification for the Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan (DRAP). Dr. Mahwesh Khan, Chairperson of the Pakistan Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Association (PPMA), noted a 52% surge in exports following pricing deregulation. She emphasized that achieving WHO certification remains a priority to boost global market access.

Barter Trade Delays with Iran
The committee scrutinized bottlenecks in Pakistan-Iran barter trade, particularly the 600 trucks stranded at the border. Special Secretary TDAP Shakeel Ahmed Mangnejo clarified that only 30+ trucks had proper clearance, while the rest faced delays due to incomplete documentation.

Afghanistan Trade Agreement Progress
Senator Rehman questioned Commerce Minister Jam Kamal on the $500 million trade deal with Afghanistan, urging faster finalization. Kamal assured that negotiations were being expedited while exploring other trade expansion opportunities.

Textile Exports: Growth & Challenges
Pakistan’s textile exports grew by 9.9% (July 2024–February 2025), with value-added products dominating. However, Special Secretary Mangnejo admitted that raw material exports (like cotton and yarn) declined, stressing the need for high-end textile production.

TDAP’s Role in Market Expansion
CEO TDAP Faiz Ahmed highlighted efforts to increase pharmaceutical exports to Egypt, Indonesia, and Africa, while also promoting Pakistan’s mineral sector at global expos like PDAC 2025 Canada.

Call for Improved Coordination
Senator Rehman pointed out gaps in sectoral collaboration, urging TDAP to form an expert committee for regular Senate briefings.

The meeting concluded with commitments to strengthen trade policies, streamline regulatory processes, and fast-track agreements to bolster Pakistan trade development.
