Windows 10 support nears end

Microsoft is urging Windows 10 users to upgrade to Windows 11 as support for the older operating system is set to end in October 2025. In a recent email campaign, the tech giant warned users that after this date, it will no longer provide free security updates, technical assistance, or software fixes for Windows 10.

The email, titled “End of support for Windows 10 is approaching,” emphasizes the importance of transitioning to Windows 11 to ensure continued security and functionality. However, the upgrade process isn’t seamless for everyone. Many PCs manufactured before 2018 lack the TPM 2.0 security module required to run Windows 11, leaving millions of devices incompatible.

For those unable to upgrade to Windows 11, Microsoft suggests recycling or trading in their old Windows 10 PCs. While these devices may have little resale value, recycling them ensures they don’t become e-waste. Alternatively, users can purchase a new Windows 11-compatible PC to stay updated.

Windows 10 still dominates the global desktop market, holding a 58% share as of early 2024, while Windows 11 has been steadily growing, capturing 38% of the market. For users who choose to remain on Windows 10, Microsoft recommends backing up files via OneDrive and offers a one-year extension of security updates for $30.

As the deadline approaches, Microsoft’s push to upgrade to Windows 11 highlights the urgency for users to modernize their systems or risk leaving their devices unprotected. Whether through upgrading, recycling, or purchasing new hardware, the message is clear: the era of Windows 10 is coming to an end.
