Archaeological Sensation: Kushan Monarch's Likeness Emerges on Mohenjo-Daro Coins

LARKANA, Nov 24,2023: In a startling archaeological breakthrough, the visage of a Kushan king from the second century has been unveiled on copper coins recovered during the meticulous cleaning process in Mohenjo-Daro.

Weighing a substantial 5 kg, these ancient artifacts surfaced during repair work near the stupa of Mohenjo-Daro’s Gaji street, opening a window into the past.

A cadre of experts, led by Senior Engineer of Archaeology Ali Haider Gadehi, Curator of Kotaji Museum Ruhal Amin Ghamro, and Assistant Chemist, conducted a thorough examination of the coins.

Their collective findings strongly indicate a direct link to the illustrious Kushan period, adding an extra layer of significance to the discovery.

The excavation unfolded against the backdrop of the restoration of a collapsed wall, with Director of Conservation Mohanjo Daro, Syed Shakir Shah, at the helm of the operation. The technical team, spearheaded by Archaeological Conservator Ghulam Shabir Joyo, played a pivotal role in bringing these historical remnants to light.

Director Syed Shakir Shah, upon retrieving the coins, promptly transferred samples of water and soil from the site to the laboratory for comprehensive analysis.

Rustam Ali Bhutto, a laboratory assistant, revealed that an intricate cleaning process would be applied to unveil the concealed details of the images and inscriptions adorning the coins.

Speaking to the media, Director Syed Shakir Ali Shah affirmed that these coins date back to the Kushan period of the 2nd century. Eager to unravel the mystery further, he expressed enthusiasm about ongoing research aimed at identifying the specific kings associated with these coins.

Upon successful identification, these ancient treasures are slated for public display in a museum, offering a captivating journey into the opulent history of the Kushan era
